Amen! As you know, I grew up in Canada, on the east coast. I am mixed race and my dad was Black and I had no idea of my family history, only a vague conception that we must have come from Africa at some point and were likely enslaved. It wasn't until Ancestry DNA and working on my family tree that I discovered our roots. And I'm writing a book about it now. It has to be fiction because sadly, the records aren't there to support a strictly biographical account.
We absolutely have to start telling our own stories. not only because of what's been happening as far as violence goes, but also with what's happening in states like Florida which seeks to indoctrinate a generation of children into believing slavery was "no big deal," etc.
