Camp, Catchy And Fun
I recently read a story by Pierce McIntyre in which he prompts readers to write about their favourite debut albums. Here’s the story should you wish to respond:
Now, before I get into my pick, I must confess that my favourite debut album has absolutely nothing to do with quality in that musical purist sense. There’s no sense debating the intricacies of guitar riffs or drum solos because that’s not why I love it. This album is all about the feels.
Anyone who knows me knows I loves me some George Michael. From the moment he jitterbugged across my TV screen in 1984, I was hooked. What I didn’t know, at the time, was that WHAM had an album before the smash hit that was Make it Big. Enter Fantastic, which, was, well despite not being as big on this side of the pond as it may have been in the UK, fantastic!
Yes, it’s cheesy as hell. Yes, it’s silly. Yes, it’s camp. But many of the songs are also cleverly written. Take, for example, WHAM Rap, which was expressly political and well, just…
