Dave Chappelle’s Special
I so did not want to write this. Seriously, I did not want to write this, but you all got me mad! And by “you all” I mean white folk. I know you’re well-meaning. I know you want a nice tidy world with equality for all. But let’s just break this shit down, shall we?
I preface this by saying the following. I’m a biracial middle-aged chick that looks white but was raised in a black home. I have black sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews that I fear for every single day. That’s not an exaggeration, I worry about them EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I have a 10-year-old nephew. He’s a star basketball player, a stellar student, an active member of his church community and I’m terrified for his safety.
I’m also sympathetic to the LGBTQ+ community. I have friends and family that are gay, trans, curious and whatever else. I grew up in a time when we were just on the cusp of accepting those who were outside the mainstream of the time.
I don’t care who you want in your bed at night. I don’t care if you know that your gender doesn’t match the equipment you were assigned at birth. I applaud your bravery for recognizing it because I can’t even begin to imagine or understand what that feels like. For me, we're all people on this little planet, equal worth, all with something to learn…
