Emancipation Day was celebrated for the first time in my home province of NB this year due largely to the efforts of my cousin, Dr. Mary McCarthy-Brandt. It received very little fanfare.
Yes, there was slavery in Canada. funny, my school missed that too. My law school was named after a slave holder, George Duncan Ludlow, NB Chief Justice who upheld the institution of slavery in an 1800 case, R. v. Jones. The school's name was changed in 2020.
My father's grade school teacher, Mrs. winslow came from a prominent family in Woodstock, NB and it was common knowledge that her ancestors held slaves.
