Canada’s Half-Assed Approach To Health Care Needs To Change

One of the things I’m most proud of as a Canadian is our medicare system. Free health care for all! Well, not free, it’s taxpayer-funded, and our taxes are high, but still, we can walk into an emergency room anywhere, anytime without the fear of a large bill. We can get operations, really big ones, without losing our homes.

And one of the things I’m most ashamed of as a Canadian is our medicare system. It’s failing and failing badly. There have been issues for a long time, but they’ve been swept under the rug. The thing is, it’s hard to hide an elephant under a rug and not trip over it.

People are falling through the cracks. People are dying, I mean literally dying, as in ceasing to live, in over-taxed emergency rooms and long waiting lists as they wait for someone, anyone, to care.

In my home province of New Brunswick, a recent death occurred in the waiting room of ER of the capital city:
