Honestly, it sounds like there was fault on both parts. He obviously wanted to control and possess her with money, but also had something shady going on in the background (was she certain he was actually divorced? because there is no divorce stipulation in the known legal world that prevents adult children from knowing their parent has a new partner, that's just straight up bullshit).

However, she seemed okay with taking money and gifts from a man she wasn't attracted to.

Ghosting is so cowardly, but in this case, probably for the best, the controlling, insecure trash kinda took itself out...while your friend was sleeping, LOL
