I have to agree with the commenter that mentioned life experience while also agreeing with your general premise. For example, I thought it was absurd that my ex's wife argued with my kids on a particular legal point by telling them that just because I studied and practiced law, it didn't mean I knew more about law than the average person. Ummmm, yeah, that's kind of exactly what it means.

However, I have also been in situation where I had an opinion and an expert had a different one. Usually in a medical context. Sometimes, life experience and spending 24/7 with something can outweigh a 10 minute overview with an expert. Sort of like when you ahve a kid and you know there's something wrong, but doctors keep telling you everything is fine. And later, you're vindicated (sadly).

It sounds like I'm hedging and playing on both sides of the fence. And I guess I am. But like everything else in life, it's complicated.
