I was absolutely treated differently from my brother. My mother outwardly favoured him. My father preferred me.

I can't say I treated my 3 boys the same either. They weren't and aren't the same people. I love them all and strove for equality, but treated them according to their needs, strengths, weaknesses etc. One might have needed more attention when it came to schoolwork, another had more freedom because he showed himself capable of handling it, another got more expensive jeans because he was so tall the cost more. You get the idea.
