I watched it. When I heard the calls for cancellation, I watched it again. First, it's Dave Chappelle, what do you think you're going to get? Second, I applaud his honesty and vulnerability in admitting he didn't get it regarding the trans community. I think we need more honesty, more open dialogue to get somewhere. When he talked about being asked if he could just accept someone was having a human experience, that said it all for me.

And his bit about Daphne broke my heart. He's not punching down, he's looking for commonality, he's trying to understand. I'm straight and a white looikng biracial (black father, white mother) woman of a certain age and from my privilged position where I can straddle and see both sides, here are my observations. Divide and conquer, simple. We all now black comics aren't here for everyone, that's not the point. There's a world view that's being threatened, a world view that's persisted for generations, straight, white and male. What better way to ensure it persits than divide and conquor? Turn the trans and gay community against the black community, keep them fighting between themselves so they can't see what's really up.

It's time to drop the swords and join each other in solidarity. We may not completely understand each other, but we can get past that, we can educate each other. What we do understand in oppression, marginalization, a denial of who we are and what we have to offer. We all know that.

I say lets turn lemons into lemonaide. Let's use Dave's special as a catalyst for dialogue and solidarity. I don't understand everyone's struggle, but I accept it and I'll fight against it.
