Holy shitballs! I never thought I’d be one of those writers that wrote about writing, but here we are. Sorry, but I’m just too excited to think properly right now.

As many of you know, Vocal Media launched a Fiction Awards challenge a while back. Winners will each receive $5000 and be included in a collection of short stories. Those who are shortlisted were announced today.

Among those listed was yours truly! I submitted a handful of short fiction pieces I’d written over the months, but it was this one they chose as a finalist:

Okay, so, I’m one of over 1000 which has to be whittled down to 25 winners, no biggie, right? Except for me, it’s freakin’ huge! HUGE! Why? Because I love fiction. Because I want to be able to write fiction well. And because it’s the one area of my writing I feel completely, desperately inadequate in. I’m almost apologetically insecure about my fiction efforts. So, yeah, even this small nod is a big deal for me.

This is just enough to convince me to keep working at it. Maybe I can write fiction…maybe.
