I'm Canadian and there are pros and cons to our system. Waiting months...try years for some things. It took 22 months for my husband to see an allergy specialist.

Many Canadians don't have a family doctor and hospital wait times can be 11 to 12 hours, and that's actually pretty standard.

To pay for this system, our taxes are high. That said, it seems to me that the system, which is managed on a province by province basis is mismanaged. It's like they're trying to cover everything and doing a piss-poor job of it. If they're going to have universal healthcare, then fund it and manage it properly because right now, people are dying on waiting lists.

If I had an option, I'd buy private insurance so I could get seen quicker. I'd like to have the choice. I think that the socialized system needs to be there for those who can't avail themselves of private insurance, but maybe, just maybe, allowing us some choice might take some of the presssure of a system that right now is coming apart at the seams
