I'm Canadian too. I'm in The Soo and we had a mini-protest thing here. People are surprised that Quiet Little Canada is dealing with this. Not Canadians.
You're right, we've long had a far right contingent. Remember the COR (Confederation of Regions Party) in the east, or the Reform Party of Canada way back in the 90s? They were so far right they make MAGA folks look almost reasonable.
But as to the protests, I have a few thoughts. First, they're barking up the wrong tree. Yes, the feds mandated vaccines for cross border truckers because it is a federally regulated industry. But the rest of it, mask mandates, QR codes, that's a matter of provincial jurisdiction (I'm a retired lawyer).
I'm all for the right to peaceful assembly, but harassing the homeless and soup kitchen staff, desecrating Terry Fox's statue and knockign down the National War Monument fence don't qualify as peaceful. Nor does taking a city by hostage.
I don't like Trudeau, but if he invokes the War Measures Act (well, Emergencies Act, as it's called now), good. Taken over by radicals or not, they've been emboldened thus far and that's a dangerous precedent. I thank you for your story. It's prompted a thought in my head about a possible story abotu Canada's far right from way back. I will, of course, credit you for the inspiration.
