I'm not American, I'm Canadain (so, I guess, American-adjacent), and from my perspective the leaders aren't raked over the coals for their blatent lies because the majority of people don't know they're lies.

It's the same here in Canada. The average voter knows next to nothing about politics, how the elctoral ssytem works or the very basics of economics.
