Indeed it is. I'm not sure about the US, but in Canada, access to justice in these situations is appallingly bad! Competent legal representation is expensive. Even a fresh out of school lawyer will run someone close to $200 an hour. People can't afford that. Heck, when I was a lawyer, I couldn't even afford my services!
The spouse without the purse strings is easy to abuse in these situations because the abuser acts with impunity knowing their soon-to-be ex can't afford proper help. It's disgusting!
I could go on and on for days about what's wrong with the system, but you get the idea.
