It saddens me that young people are still going through this. I'm mixed (Black dad and white mom) and went through the same type of thing. Add to that the fact that I'm white presenting. Growing up was tough in the 70s and 80s. The pressure to "pick a side" came from both sides. The feeling of being an alien dropped off on the planet, of not ever fitting in is very real. In my day, there wasn't even any representation in the media of mixed race. On TV folks that were mixed played Black characters (think Lisa Bonet or Jasmine Guy) There we no mixed race characters. It's hard as a kid not seeing anything that looks like you in media. I wrote about it a few times on here.
It's honestly taken me most of my 53 years of life to conclude that I don't have to choose. I am neither and I am both. I am a daughter of the slave and a daughter of the master.
