I've had lots of money. I've been broke as shit. And I've fallen into the social comparison trap. When I graduated law school and began practicing, there was an incredible pressure to "look the part," to have the right car, the right house, the right clothes. That was almost more exhausting than the actual job.

What I found is the need to have more and more and better and better and to keep up with the Jones, really came from a place of insecurity, unhappiness and anxiety.

Oh, and not for nothing, a thing my mother used to say that rings true is that truly rich people don't go around advertising it. It's usually the guy with the beat up Honda in the driveway of the modest house that has the healthy bank balance while his neighbours have nothing but bills to maintain their facade.
