Jesus! I thought it was bad here in Canada, but it's much worse in the US. Our disability system is more provincially based, with some provinces not having really any system at all, but the larger ones, like Ontario, where I'm at at least have something. It's not a lot, but a couple with no kids gets about $1700 a month and can have up to $50k in savings. And healthcare is free, which is nice. There are long waits for some things, but, its better than the alternative. Granted from what I've been told disability payments haven't gone up sonce 2018 and prices have skyrocketed, so people are having a tough time.
A new bill was introduced in our federal legislature for a nation-wide disability scheme, we'll see what happens.
It's insane that governments force the disabled to live lives without any real hope of something beyond the meagre pittance they dole out. It's also short sighted because if you allow people some dignity and some sort of hope, they'll rise to the occasion.
