Martin's name came up because in order to get any information, I had to cast a very wide net. I started narrowly researching my specific ancestors, but found next to nothing...just a listing in the Book of Negroes and a link to Paris' former owner. But nothing about his life beyond that.
So, I went wider, because in order to write intelligently about slavery during the revolutionary period, I have to know something about it, the conditions, the social framework both within the context of slavery and as between the slaves themselves, the landscape of the specific geographical area I pinpointed, even how people spoke, stuff like that. As I went wider and wider and read more and more I recall Martin's name coming up, other names popped up too, Boston King, David George, etc.
