Maybe it was, just as your use of language in your first paragraph is intentional and meant to evoke a sense that someone is asking white people to "give something up." That's pretty scary language, isn't it? Give something up? Evokes all kinds of images of BIPOC individuals coming over and asking you to give shit to them as compensation. Not even close.

Now that that little observation's out of the way, I can't speak for every person of colour, but I don't think anyone is asking for any individual white person to give anything up at all. It's more about the recognition of a certain set of facts and conditions that exist. I think a lot of white people just don't see it because it's not part of their life, so how would they? In their world it doesn't exist because it doesn't affect them. it's like that friend everyone knows that has too many cats and they don't clean the litterbox...they're used to the smell, it's normal to them, it's only when someone else points it out that it becomes noticeable.

I don't have a better term at the moment. maybe once my coffee kicks in. But my explanation and Monopoly example was partly meant to explain the "privilege" part of it and not make anyone feel like an asshole.
