My father's paternal grandmother was Scottish. Yeah, I remember my mother talking a lot about "good hair."
As for exposure to my genetic peers, I was adopted by my paternal uncle and his wife. They were both Black but cared very little about fashion or hairdressing. My dad kept his hair very short and my mother just let her hair go natural. I had cousins and other relatives I saw on occasion but not often and none of them were mixed, they were all Black. I had no contact with my white family aside from my grandmother. And the army base I grew up on was very white.
