My mother and I weren't close when I was growing up, but as I grew up, we became close. At 84, she began showing odd signs and as diagnosed, first with Lewy Body Dementia, and later with Late Onset Psychosis. After a year of trying to keep her in her home with caregivers, it wa obvious she needed more.
Do stay vigilant! I put my mother in the best care home in the province. I paid $1200 a month over and above the provincial rate to ensure she was in the best place possible. It was great for a while, until she complained about being hungry and she was rushed to hospital completely jaundiced from kidney stones blocking her bile ducts. Nobody listened to her when she complained. She didn't turn from brown to yellow in an instant.
She spent 6 months in hospital from both illness and waiting for a nursing home bed. When I told the "bad" home she wasn't coming back, they tried to charge me 3 months notice. I was a lwayer, ha ha ha.
She did go to a nice home, where she was treated well and lived out her days with dignity and respect until she passed away on Christms Day, 2020 in her 92nd year.
She was horrible to me as a kid. She hated my guts. But she was old and helpless and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. She cared for me as a small kid and I was able to grant her the same courtesy as an adult, and I'm glad I did. It jsut sucks that there are places that take advantage.
