OMG! I completely identifiy with this. I've often felt the same way, completly invisible, but then on public display, tasked with propping up someone else's ego with my "ooohs" and "ahhhs" over a gift that clearly has nothing to do with me or who I am.
Thankfully, I've rid myself of the people that put me in that position.
Much like you, I'm more about the time together, not getting stuff. In fact, I've actively told my kids not to get me anything. They will, but it'll be either little things I like or gag gifts.
