Right! I was never taught about race. In fact, my entire education on race was my mother forcing me to watch Roots when I was, I don't know, about 7.
But yeah, the white kids sure knew all about race! I was raised on a military base in eastern Canada and like your daughter, I had kids tell me they couldn't play with me because my parents were Black. I lost a boyfriend once, when I was 16 because my Black father came to pick me up. Seriously, this boy's father thought I was the smartest, prettiest little girl since whatever and thought I was great, to wanting to hide the silverware and saying I wasn't "their kind". (Spoiler alert, we reconnected and I married that boy, ha ha ha).
