Rockin’ The Beaver
For decades while the US and UK have been battling it out for rock supremacy, we’ve been quietly and humbly rocking out up here in the Great White North and being dismissed as, “just Canadian.”
But Canada is more than maple syrup, super polite people, and the ever-industrious beaver. We’re a nation of music. We may not have had the glitz of the big American bands, and we may not be the prettiest (Sebastien Bach notwithstanding), but when you’ve got the steak, who needs the sizzle?
Before Drake, before Beiber, there were the rockers, awesome bands that could go toe to toe with any in the world. From one end of the country to the other, Canadian bands have been making music that has stood the test of time and become part of the cultural landscape. You may not know all of them by name, but if you’re of a certain age, you’ll sure recognize the tunes.
Rush: Probably the best—known of the Canadian rockers, Rush was pretty amazing, especially considering the band consisted of only 3 members. fronted by Geddy Lee, these Toronto boys were able to break into the US market with sales of some 26,000,000 albums and 7 Grammy nominations.
