SMH Moments
Sometimes I just have to wonder what the hell is wrong with people. Well, not all people, a select few, really. You know the ones I’m talking about, the ones that do or say something so incomprehensibly outrageous that you’re left dumbfounded. I’ve had what I think might be more than my share of those moments. It’s almost as if these people follow me around, or maybe I’m following them around. I’m not sure. All I know is they make me worry about the future survival of the human race. Here are some highlights:
- The Jailbird Dater:
Back when I was practising law, I used to do something called Duty Counsel a couple of times a month. In a nutshell, that meant being in court for the day and providing free basic legal advice to people who were charged with various offences. My job was to help them with whatever matter brought them before the court. It could be anything from entering a plea to seeking bail or representing them with respect to sentencing. It was one of my favourite things to do and something I’d encourage every junior litigator to try. There’s no better way to learn how to think fast on your feet than running through 75 files in a matter of hours.
Monday mornings were always the busiest time for Duty Counsel lawyers. The city jail was usually packed with people…
