I raised my boys purposely to think for themselves after having been raised by a mother that...well, let's just say she didn't see the value in independent thought (she may have been a product of her generation). For me to turn around and pester them because babies are cute would make me a hypocrite.

You're right, nothing is ever all fun and games. I'm sorry about the grandson that went to the dark side. Divorce often has consequences that reach far beyond the slipping couple. I too, had a grandson, well, a "step-grandson," that I adored, but when I divorced his grandfather that relationship ended. Well, there was more to it. My step son was happy to let me see the baby, that wasn't the issue, it was my ex, his continual stalking, blackmail attempts, etc. made it next to impossible. That and my step son didn't take too kindly to my reporting his father's criminal behaviour to the authorities.
