Maybe dreams do come true. Not all at once, but in small increments.
Five years ago, I could have never imagined being where I am today. I was a terrified wannabe writer who joined Vocal on the promise of a chance to win $20,000 for a short story.
Of course, I didn’t win. I didn’t even share the story. I doubt more than 3 people read it.
I joined all the Facebook groups but still refused to share my work. I was in awe and intimidated by all the wonderful scribes whose work was miles better than mine. They got all the Top Stories and dozens of glowing comments on their work. I could never be like them.
Little by little, I tried sharing a poem here, and a short story there. Mostly I shared personal essays, creative non-fiction. That’s what I was most comfortable with initially.
To my surprise, people started reading them. Soon, I got Top Stories and comments too. The writers I looked up to embraced me and encouraged me. I even won a few challenges.
Then I made the move to Medium where I found another great community of writers and friends who continued to support and encourage me. Through reading their work, I learned more about the craft of writing as well as about myself. Through their reading of…
