You're spot on, ego is a big part of it, as is a fear or reluctance to give up control. It's a scary thing for an older person to give up the control they've had over their lives for decades. But in this case, it must be done and sooner rather than later.
I'd really like to know where his wife is on this. It seems to me she should be encouraging him to step down, not patting on the head like a 2 year old who ate all his peas.
