As far as a guy trying to impress (and women do it too), insecurity is a bitch! There's no need to try and impress. Just come as you are, be you, be authentic. Authenticity and a strong sense of self impress me more than anything else these days. When I rekindled my relationship with my high school sweetheart (after over 20 years of being apart), he was no longer the classical heartthrob rocking Ikeda jeans he once was. He was nearing 400 pounds, balding and middle-aged. But he was himself. He knew himself. He was okay with who he was and guess what, 8 years later we're married and happy as clams. You get the idea. And to me he's gorgeous! Granted he has lost over 100 pounds and grew back some hair, funny what real food will do, but that's another story.
You're right about looks fading with age. It's true. And what's considered beautiful changes across time and across cultures. At this point one of the most beautiful sights to me is seeing an elderly couple in their 80s or 90s sitting in the park holdign hands and eating ice cream. :)
