The Brilliance of Norm MacDonald

Saying Goodbye To a Canadian Legend

Oh, Canada, land of the free, home of the brave. Yeah, that’s all true, we’re free and brave and all that shit. We’ll kick your ass and bring you a Timmies (that’s an iconic Canadian coffee chain) after we’re done. But, do you know what else we are? We’re funny as hell! Look, the winters are long and cold up here, when it’s minus 45 with a wind chill, you really can’t do much but laugh. When you have to literally call into work snowed in because your front door has an 8-foot drift against it, preventing you from opening it, you have no other option than laughter. We’re a funny people.

Don’t believe me? Well, our comedic pedigree stands as irrefutable evidence. I don’t really want to name drop, but, Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, John Candy, Dan Ackroyd, Howie Mandel, Phil Hartman, Will Arnett, Dave Foley, Jim Carrey…yeah, all born and bred under the humble maple leaf. We grow ’em funny up here!

And they don’t come much funnier than Norm MacDonald, a crazy Canuck kid hailing from Quebec City. We lost him yesterday to Leukemia at 61, and the world of comedy, and the world in general, is poorer for it.
