Welcoming Our New Addition
Calm down, the new addition isn’t a baby. Well, it’s not a baby human, at least. It’s a baby dog, a puppy. Rudy is a 12 week old Australian Pyrenees/Border Collie cross we adopted from a farm nearby. He’s been here for about 24 hours and boy oh boy, is he ever a going concern!
Back on the farm, he lived with his mommy, daddy and brother in the barn. As a result, he’s not housebroken. And he wasn’t used to walking on a leash. But he’s a very clever boy and he’s already mastered the leash. The peeing and pooping outside, well, we’re working on it. Housebreaking a pup is a lot like potty training a child, it’s the adult, or in this case, the human that really is trained to see the signs and to act accordingly.
I named him Rudy because he reminds me of my father. He’s big and strong, but with a huge warm heart. He thinks he’s a lap dog even though he’s too big for my lap already.
I haven’t had a dog in years. I forgot how much work training them is. It’s almost like having a newborn infant in the house — the schedules, the getting up at night. Then again, none of my human babies made me go out into the snow and cold. But Rudy’s worth it. He’s captured our hearts and became an integral member of the family. And how could you not love him? I mean, just look at that face:
