Well, that's all well and good, but, using myself as an example again, nobody, ever, in my almost 52 years of life has ever assumed me to be a person of colour. Not once. It's only been when I've told people, or when people have heard through the grapevine or met my father that I've had instances of my white privilege being yanked, so to speak. That in no way negates the existence of white privilege.

I've written a short, and very simplified article on a very complex issue in order to aid in understanding and to try to take the sting out of the word privilege because that seems to be where the sticking point is. I haven't done an in-depth thesis on the topic. However, within white privilege, or within shall we say racial or colouristic privilege, there are many many layers and nuances. Lighter-skinned Black people tend to be viewed more favourably than their darker-skinned counterparts, for example. But at the end of the day, looking white, whether you are or not (because I do and I'm not) affords an individual some benefits, some of which I've outlined.
