Wow, just wow! I have so much to say and not enough words to say it. I never thought about the change either, but it is needed.
Not only was this land stolen from the Indigenous populations. But our racism has persisted each and every day from then. Oh, so the government and the Church stole kids from the arms of their parents and forced them into residential schools where they were beaten, molested and as we know now, killed all in the name of "civilizing them". And what does our government do in the face of the mass graves? They declare a holiday, because that ought to shut them up, right?
My mother used to tell me all the time when I was a kid not to make the mistake of thinking Canada was any less racist than the US. I didn't get it then, I was young. But it didn't take me long to get it.
As for Jully's change in the lyrics, it's not the first time the words have been changed. They were officially changed from "in all our sons command" to "in all of us command" to acknowledge the fact that it wasn't only men that contributed. Her change was maybe unofficial, but it's necessary and true.
As for the racist tweet, why am I not surprised?
